AR-10 Platform

I am fascinated by the idea of a .308/7.62 NATO on the AR platform and I'm seriously considering picking one up. I doubt it will ever replace my Browning .300 WinMag as my hog rifle, but it looks like a LOT of fun. I'd most likely go with the short barrel for kicks.

Has anyone here spent any real time with them? I read that Bushmaster stopped theirs after some problems. H&K hasn't released theirs to the public market yet. The two main brands seem to be:

I live in California, so high-cap mags are not an issue (and the term removed from all dictionaries by order of the State Legislature).

Any comments or recommendations?

The Roberti-Roos act bans the DPMS and Armalite by name. The HK doesn't seem to be on the list but would be banned under SB23 by feature unless you replace the magazine release with a bullet button or else use a monsterman grip.

If you want a .308/7.62 rifle in California, may I suggest a fine Springfield M1A instead perhaps in a Squad (18in bbl) or Socom (16in bbl) configuration.

Another option in California is to build it yourself. Calguns.net has a good list of instruction for making sure you build a Ca. legal AR type rifle. Buy a CA legal AR lower and upper and componants. Or just buy a stripped lower and buy a DPMS or whatever upper. as for some reason the gun is the lower not the upper. Shrug.

Hi Alex,

I have a somewhat pricey custom built AR10 built on an Armalite receiver and parts that utilizes a Kreiger match grade barrel that has been profiled down to a sort of medium contour with a free-floating Badger Ordinance aluminum handguard and YHM Phantom flash suppressor.  You will never see two of these on the range at the same time.

I love mine immensely, but should qualify this entry with the fact I do live in Texas.

Given you are in the People's Republic of Kalifornia I would agree with Jerome on the M1A platform or even an M1 Garand.

True if you don't mind parts together. The CMMG .308 lower is off-the-list.
