Reminders - A couple of quick reminders for the end of the year: Change all of the batteries in your emergency gear and cut up your holiday gift boxes and place them in trash bins. Do not place boxes on the curb in front of your home in full view of criminals.

Since I do much of my shopping online, I end up with a lot of cardboard boxes. One practice I've had since living in an apartment building is to remove all information from the box that connects it to me (multiple address stickers on each package), so someone won't know just from looking at the cardboard in the recycling area who is getting everything. Anything with my address gets shredded.

More recently I've stopped receiving packages at my apartment. I use a nearby private mailbox service to receive all packages (UPS, FedEx, USPS, etc). They email me when I get a package and I go pick it up when I have time. No more knocking on my door for a delivery or leaving notes at my door saying I wasn't home. Since it's only a mile or so away, and is on the way to where I work, I may start dropping boxes off directly at the recycling center.

Also, for batteries I use sanyo eneloop rechargeables as much as possible.
