It’s the middle of the night.  You’re kids are all over at a friend’s house for the night and you’re sleeping when you wake up to a bay window crashing.  You see light coming under your bedroom door, hear a male voice, and know one or more bad guy is in your house.  As you roll over to wake your wife so she can begin calling 911, you realize she isn’t there.  Upon retrieving your firearm of choice (which happens to be a 9mm handgun) and performing a chamber and magazine check, you remember that you shot all your standard defensive rounds at the IDPA match earlier in the day and you’re currently loaded with full metal jacket (FMJ) cartridges.  Your backup magazines are also loaded with FMJs.  Without other options, you decide to begin clearing your house.

As you open your bedroom door and begin slicing the pie, you immediately identify an armed bad guy standing in the hallway, his back to the wall.  As he starts raising his firearm towards you, you have to make a decision:
1)  Shoot – you know your wife is somewhere in the room on the other side of the wall.  You know an FMJ bullet from a 9mm has a good chance of over-penetrating; going through the bad guy into the room on the other side of the wall where you’re pretty sure your wife is.  You don’t know for sure if there are other bad guys out there.
2)  No shoot – bad guy might decide to run off and leave you alone but he could just as easily decide to kill you right there.
3)  ??

What do you do?

Shoot. If I shoot him, there's a slim chance I'll hit the wife. If I don't shoot, he'll shoot me and then probably shoot her anyway.

If I were your wife...

Shoot him;don't miss.

If you think you might miss, drop to one knee before shooting him so at least the angle of trajectory changes. But please be quick about it, I can't afford to bury you.

The basic premise is flawed from the start. (1) You don't shoot up your premium SD carry ammo at an IDPA match. (2) You use the FMJ at the match and load with carry ammo after (that's what practice ammo is for). (3) You don't allow yourself to run so short of ammo types that you have to make that decision. (4) A violent middle of the night break in... subject in my house... raises arm towards me...decision already made.... no thought required.

Thanks for the replies.  Most of the time, when I ask questions I already know my answer and am just curious as to what other people think.  This scenario was no different and I've already made my decision.

I agree that the basic premise of this scenario is flawed.  However, it was intentionally designed to be a less than ideal situation and I can think of many scenarios where this very situation may occur.  In fact, I remember an article appearing in Combat Handguns in which an individual was forced to draw a 1911 when confronted at a gas station on his way home from a competition.  One of the stages in the match required shooting carry ammunition and he hadn't brought extra (match coordinators have done this at my local matches in the past).  Rather than taking the procedural penalties, he shot the only carry ammunition he had and had reloaded his weapon with practice ammo for the ride home.  Fortunately, the situation de-escalated without shots being fired, but if he had been forced to shoot, it would have been ball ammo.  In this situation perhaps he made a poor choice choosing to shoot carry ammo when that's all he had but it's still the decision he made.

Point is: no situation is ideal and it's important to consider abnormal or  situations even when we created the situation we're in.

I would take a knee and shoot. If the round does pass through, it will likely pass at an upward angle and miss someone in the next room.

I believe this scenario calls for a Capt. Kirk roll...

Don't shoot, hold his attention, MY wife is probably already drawing a bead on him and I'd hate to interfere.

Bud,
Good point! It would suck to piss your wife off, especially AFTER she did the Capt. Kirk roll to get the shot lined up...
