I have a marketing and advertising background and it occurs to me that the gun manufacturers did themselves a disservice by naming the AR the AR. I don't know what it originally meant (automatic rifle?) but whatever it was was lost in translation to the media and they (and the government) took it to mean assault rifle. Which of course is nonsensical. Battlefield rifle implies to me a GI Joe wannabe.
I think we can all help to clarify, in a positive and respectful way, by emailing the media whenever they use incorrect verbiage.

AR stands for Armalite Rifle. The original manufacturer, before Colt bought the rights. Same as the AR-7, the little .22 that disassembles into the stock.
Besides, no matter if is was originally the CAAK-15 (Cute as a Kitten), the media would rename it or spin it into whatever sounds dangerous. You are giving them to much credit. They never know what the truth is, I mean how many times have "reporters" (and use that term very loosely) correctly gotten the nomenclature of a weapon (that is a firearm for the NRA sticklers) correct. To most reporters every rifle, and most shotguns, are evil "assault rifles/weapons", possession of more than one firearm constitutes an arsenal, and anyone supporting the 2nd Amendment is a right wing nutjob and probably a racist.

Given the popularity and widespread civilian/sporting use of the AR platform, there are some that feel AR now stands for America's Rifle. Chris Christian

. How's about "Rifle."
The Lame Stream Media could turn any name against us anyway.
Refuse to play their game. "This is a rifle. Semi-automatic, magazine fed, type AR-15. There's no need to characterize it further."

At least no one can argue it is not in common usage.

The name I use can be used from most any item that does or assists in mechanical work, a tool. Funny, I can use that name for the Media too. I guess it is how you use the word.
