I just finished Stephen Hunter's new book, I, Sniper and I see that Mr. Ayoob is mentioned in the book..... very nice!

Great book by the way.... I read all 415 pages this evening.... I couldn't put it down.

I have not read that one.  I have read some of his other books and really enjoyed them.  From what I understand Hunter is a gun guy.

Mas - Thanks for recommending Steven Hunter.  While waiting for I Sniper to come out I have read four of his books and ordered four others plus I Sniper.  They are hard to put down.

I have been reading Stephen Hunter for a while now.  As I'm sure we all know "Shooter", was based off of his book, Point of Impact.  A great read.

Hey, who's the fat old guy shooting my pistol?

Loved "Point of Impact" as well as most of the rest of Hunter's books. "Shooter" was alright. I'm still trying to find out what kind of bullet can demolish a can of Dinty Moore beef stew and still retain its shape enough to be paper patched out of another rifle. Just sayin'...

I am a huge fan of Stephen Hunter.  I highly recommend most of his novels.  Just loved Dirty White Boys.  Not gun or sniper oriented but a great novel.  Plus it has one of the best first sentences in all of literature.  Excellent trifecta of novels, Point of Impact, Dirty White Boys and Black Light.  You just can't go wrong

Yeah, that was a little hole...typical Hollywood.  They made Nick Memphis a rookie that was almost scared of his own shadow too, he wasn't that in the book.

Which book is the next in line after Point of Impact?

It may not be the next in line, but I think that Point of Impact, Dirty White Boys then Black Light make a sort of trilogy.

Dirty White Boys is about Earl Swagger, the father.  Black Light blends the father and son into one book to sort of finish up the trilogy.

I actually read Point of Impact, Dirty White Boys, Pale Horse Coming then Black Light and that sequence was good also.  Pale Horse Coming is another Earl Swagger novel.

The first Hunter book I read was Hot Springs.  As he describes the gun handling and training on the 1911's I thought "This guy know what he is talking about, I know I have heard/seen this all before."  Then in the author's note at the end of the book he thanked Clint Smith of Thunder Ranch.... I thought it all sounded familiar! Cheesy  Great Books I've read them all!

Just finished listening to I, Sniper at work this weekend. Excellent book (15 hours and 31 minutes) and the first Stephen Hunter audio book I've listened to.

audible.com is not a sponsor of GRRN, but if you enjoy listening to podcasts then would enjoy listening to I, Sniper. They also have quite a few other Stephen Hunter's books available.

Any suggestions on which of the next books I should listen to next?

OK, be advised my wife ain't happy with you people. I bumped into the hardcover edition of Night of Thunder at the Barnes & Noble bargain bin 2 weeks ago, bought it and I am hooked.

read so far:

Point of Impact.
The 47th Samurai
Black Light
Hot Springs
Time to hunt.

Reading right now: Havana.

I am slightly partial to the Earl Swagger books, but not by much.

Earl? Bob Lee would kick his dad's butt! I love the "Kirk vs. Picard"-ness of that...
-Kevin, looking forward to an imaginary character fight...

Miggy, you gotta read Dirty White Boys and Pale Horse Coming.

Yeah, I know, sounds like porn...but trust me, here...

And don't neglect Hunter's modern classic American Gunfight, which I for one thought was the best non fiction book of the year when it came out.

The guy does his homework.

best,
Mas

Those are the 2 next books in my list. As for American Gunfight I am kicking myself: the local Barnes and Noble had it and on sale for $4.95 to boot! But since I was with the Better Half and carrying 6 instead of the "only 3 books dear, I promise"  and had spent over an hour instead of the "15 minutes tops, I know what I want, I swear" I decided not to push my luck. I sneaked the next day back to B&N but some other Hunter fan beat me to it. No other copies were available  Angry

Disclaimer: My dearly beloved Wife is not against books or Mr. Hunter (She is now engrossed with Point of Impact), she is just against books in the couch, bathroom, kitchen, floor, cars, bed, headboard, etc.  She made the comment that I have more books than ammo which made me check and I realized she was right at least regarding handgun ammo...I need to get some reloading done  Grin

a great idea if you didn't have to re-buy all the books.  My wife doesn't understand how I read more than one book at a time.
