I'd only add the advisability of finding a source of proven, well thought out, experienced analysis and advice, like Massad Ayoob and yourself.  The reader must, of course, determine if the advice is applicable to their own situation, but the words of someone who has truly seen the elephant are invaluable.   

And please, dear God, discount completely whatever is heard in a gunstore!
