am a member of a Sportsman's club that has historically catered to hunters, target shooters, and shotgunners.

We are trying to put together a healthy action shooting culture, but club rules currently prohibit shooting steel outside of matches and working from a holster outside of matches.

IF your range allows you to shoot steel, please post the rules as you know them (and a link to your club rules if you can).

Same request in regards to working from a holster. Can you wear a holstered unloaded gun around the range? Only on the line? Can you practice from a holster outside of match conditions?

Side note regarding steel. Can you shoot on personally owned steel or only club property? Are there any rules regarding certification of the steel or placement?

Any safety related issues that I can bring up to the board?

Thanks much all.

I belong to a private club where we can pretty much do what we like as long as it's safe and meets the specific shot area rules. However, we cannot shoot glass and we cannot shoot steel for the time being. They are working up a new set of rules for steel targets as some people have been bringing in home made rigs that are not always the safest to shoot.

I went out there the other night after work and set up 3 targets and ran some small CoF's just to get back in the swing of things.

Edit: I should also mention that our club is private and I have a key and can come and go as I please. There are zero commercial ranges around that allow you to work from the holster, shoot steel or even fire more than 1 round per second.

Our club is pretty open in it's allowances. Most things that are safe are allowed. You do, however, have to get any non paper target "approved" by the RO before shooting at it. There is an orientation that you have to go through before using the shooting bays where you can set up your own scenarios. You can also shoot from a holster at either the handgun line or the rifle line as long as you do not sweep anyone or exhibit any other unsafe behavior. Regarding wearing a holstered gun, we can cary loaded, even on a cold range, as long as the gun remains secure and untouched in its holster. Otherwise, the firearms need to be cleared and left on the firing line.
