The security gaurds are prohibited by thier contract from getting involved other than calling 911. Also, if they do get involved they can be charged with assault etc. as they are considered normal citizens.

well i don't know about "normal citizens" where those people are but down here in Texas if someone is attacked and on the ground like that being repeatedly kicked in the head a lawful use of deadly force law comes into play can be used to stop the attack.
Defense of Another Person
"A person is justified in using deadly force against an attacker to protect another person if he would be justified to use it to protect himself against an unlawful attack and he reasonably believes his intervention is immediately necessary to protect the other person from serious injury or death."

Prohibited or not, those guys are cowards. Human decency should dictate the way we live our lives not a contract.

People need to learn the difference between 'guards' and 'police'.
Does make one wonder 3:15 "A Girl they knew". As the old saying goes "water finds it's own level"
Sounds like maybe she learned a real lesson about who to associate with. What's the actual back story to this? I'm not saying that anybody deserves that, but there is more to this than they are letting on.

These guards are not carrying sidearms. If one of those kids pulled a gun they would be screwed. As a former security guard a long time ago I would not risk my life for $9 hour. At least its on tape and hopefully they can id some of those punks.

If a gun had been involved the guards would have been screwed anyway; those punks wouldn't have left professional witnesses standing. As far as risking your life for $9 an hour; Is it really the rate of pay that dictates your civic duty?

As far as risking your life for $9 an hour; Is it really the rate of pay that dictates your civic duty? I see where you are going with that. but the thing to keep in mind, (and I'm just trying to be objective here) is that it is very likely employees of this type get it drilled into them over and over "Do Not Get Involved" for the pure fact that getting involved means getting sued. the difference between a person on the street getting involved and a "paid and trained security guard" is that the guard is supposed to know specifically that that "can't" get involved. Leaving them wide open to major litigation. . Sucks I know, , and I certainly don't admire them for what they did, but at the same time. . If that's what you are trained to do.. . . ?. .

I was referring to what I use to do as a guard at our local zoo as the only guard at night in the whole area. In the beating I would have stepped in. Witnesses dont really compare to video cameras anyway. Remember there were 3 guards if they were all armed it might have made those punks think twice. Only a fool jumps in without assessing the situation first(in most cases). Im not suicidal.

Regardless of contracts, job titles and descriptions, they are men first and everyone has the inherent right to self defense and defense of others.
I get all that about the SGs not supposed to help. Opens a lot of doors for questions if you think that way. What if my wife were getting beat while I was on duty as an SG am I supposed to just watch? What if that same girl was getting beat and then gang raped is it ok to not get my SG buddies to help me stop this? Why even waste the money paying someone to do the job a video camera can do? I read the story from numerous sources and it seems the victim was approached by the attackers earlier and had sought out the guards for protection.
Personally I believe these security guards are men of low moral character and very low physical and moral courage and I find their lack of action inexcusable and appalling.
Contract or not they need to find a new line of work and I think a name change is in order for jobs in their field that are not supposed to or allowed to "Guard" (Security guard, One who protects property, assets, or people.) if that's not what you do then you don't even rate the title.

+1 to Daniel on that. If they are not there to render some form of assistance, then why are they there? If they are not willing to render some form of assistance, then why are they there? Their presence seems to be typical bureaucratic crap... the process is what counts, not the results. I'm sure that whatever bureaucrat drew up the contract, job description and ROE, felt quite good about having a "security presence" visible to the public. The fact they they proved to be as useless as tits on a boar hog probably never registered with the bureaucrat.... and probably never will. I can understand all the ramifications of grabbing a minor, but if three or four adult men can't sort out a group of teenagers, especially since many were girls, then they are pretty sorry examples of male Homo Saipien. Even if they didn't want to take custody of the little ******* they could have at least placed themselves between them and the victim and shielded her from further attack. I have a hard time understanding he mindset of someone who could just stand there and "observe & report". Chris Christian

+1 on daniel and chris here. Because of the idea that sure the guards were cowardly dorks but more the point, they were hired by the county to give the appearance of security but handcuffed by contract to "observe and report" not to play any true security role. I think this should be a great eye opener in Seattle as we battle things like the "assault weapons ban", carry in city parks, etc. to the point that we have to be personally responsible. Not only did the security guards do nothing, there were many other adults around and none of them did anything. The fortunate part is no permanent damage seems to have at least physically been done to this young woman and it didn't escalate to more. It makes me think of the packs of thugs that work crowds in London and it should be a wake up call about violent crime and these hoods knowing that the security cops wouldn't do anything. If the security cops were allowed to engage, had tasers, OC, and pistols this kind of crap wouldn't happen. It is examples like this that we need to use to talk to others about the importance of self-protection and what happens when we are all forced to be sheep. Sure, I am mad about the security guys but I am furious about politicians etc. that created the contract that they work under....probably because they are hiring cheap ass under qualified individuals but then I will get into an entire rant on public transportation, government ineptitude, etc. This is just like TSA -- I really can't get mad at the TSA workers, they are just doing their job but the idiots who set up their procedures so that I will "feel safe" tom

I'm with Texas on this New Hampshire law has the same release. Live free or die is taken seriously. Of course I don't know what the law is where this happened but I doubt its everyone for themselves. But this is America (for now at least).

Daniel and Chris are right on point. The hell with what your job is, what are your morals. If that had been someone they knew they would want someone to help. But also when I first saw some of the news clips on this, the people that were telling about it were also doing nothing. They only stood there and where complaining the guards did nothing. They also did nothing! Terri

That's because they were all sheep, there was no shepherd and there was a pack of wolves...so what do sheep do in that instance...they bleat and bleed....then run down to starbucks and picket the open carry sheepdogs :-) tom

Very interesting conversations!
After hearing about a woman killed in a check-out line a few years back, I thought about doing my sociology thesis on what makes some people respond to these types of situations while others don't. But I could figure out no way to create an experiment the IRB of the college would approve.
